“The class is supportive, the atmosphere encouraging, all levels of experience are catered for. We also laugh a lot. I have gone to different writing classes and workshops over the years but feel I have gained most from this one.” – Juni Parkhurst
A 11 week Creative Writing class
starting 9 January 2026
Fridays 10am to 12.30pm in person at the Hillcrest Centre, Bay Vue Rd, Newhaven, East Sussex BN9 9LH
An informal and friendly prose writing class, suitable for all levels that allow you to practice different fictional techniques (also relevant to life writing). You are welcome to work on your own project – e.g. a novel or memoir or collection of stories -if you have one, or I can provide writing prompts covering the basic techniques of fiction. Many of the students in this class are working on long projects like novels, memoirs or autobiographies but beginners are welcome.
Writing is done at home, and each person has a 15 to 20 minute slot in which to read up to 1000 words in class and receive verbal feedback. Feedback in class covers all the technical aspects of writing, like characterisation, voice, dialogue, narrative time, point of view, etc., with explanations where necessary, and more general discussion, or short writing exercises where time allows. I also take pieces home and return it with written comments, keeping the bigger issues of structure and plot in mind when it comes to longer projects.
This is a very friendly and supportive mixed ability group in which everyone works at their own level. Everyone’s writing is taken seriously, but the emphasis of the class is on encouraging each other, appreciating the unique character and experience that each person brings to the group, and enjoying ourselves. It is a very friendly and supportive group and welcoming to new members. Everyone supports and learns from each other whatever our level or experience.
Cost: £165
